The Veterinary Pathology Group (VPG) today announced that specialist medicine and oncology expert Tom Cave has joined their team.

A long-time customer and friend of VPG, in his new role Tom will act as a Specialist Consultant, supporting VPG clients with medicine and oncology cases and the VPG team with cutting edge clinical research on lymphoma.

Tom brings over 25 years of veterinary expertise to the Group. After graduating as a vet from the University of Bristol in 1996, Tom spent 4 years in mixed private practice in the South West gaining the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Medicine in 1999. He then moved to the University of Glasgow as a resident in Clinical Oncology and Haematology where he became Senior Clinical Oncologist.

Tom was awarded the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Medicine in 2004 and his MSc in Clinical Oncology from the Cancer Research UK Institute for Cancer Studies at Birmingham University in 2005. In 2004 Tom and his wife Claire started a medicine/oncology referral service which they grew to a large multidisciplinary referral service. They sold Cave Veterinary Specialists to Linneaus in 2018 and Tom now devotes his vet time to working for VVS, VPG, peripatetic referral work as Lazarus Vet Specialists, and as a trustee for the Animal Cancer Trust.

Outside of the laboratory, Tom is following in his father’s footsteps, running a 265 acre rare breed sheep and beef farm on the edge of Exmoor which prioritises wildlife and conservation.

On Tom joining VPG, Co-founder and Managing Director Andrew Torrance commented “We are both delighted and honoured to have Tom on-board. Tom will be on hand to discuss complex cases with customers in detail, looking at the whole picture including imaging. From a business perspective, Tom will consult with our specialists and contribute to our Residency Academy while continuing to provide CPD to the veterinary profession at large”.

Andrew continued “Most importantly, Tom will collaborate with and support the VPG team with cutting edge, care-transforming clinical research on lymphoma”.

Working on a part time basis, Tom is based in the South of England but will work across the Group supporting all 6 VPG laboratories and its 2,000 customers across the UK and Europe.
