Pets are found dead without any prior illness

There is peri-operative death following surgery

There has been recent pharmaceutical or over the counter drug administration and concern in relation to an adverse drug reaction

There is any suspicion of suspected malicious harm or poisoning

Gross PM results are usually available within 48 hours of receipt, but frozen cadavers can take longer, typically 2-4 days (Please note that freezing tissue causes artefacts that can negatively impact the histopathological examination.). Full results including microscopic descriptions are typically complete in 2-4 weeks. This comprehensive service includes courier, gross PM, histopathology and routine cremation.

Where desired, individual cremation and return of ashes is available and separately charged (please contact us for options). Individual ashes are returned via the laboratory to your practice.

Legal or Forensic cases are separate, requiring specific handling and tracked submission. Please telephone our Leeds laboratory on 0113 287 0175 for details and prices.

If required, specific testing such as toxicological investigation, cultures and tissue PCRs can be added to help identify the cause of death. These are discussed and charged separately.

How to Use Our Service:

To arrange a post-mortem, simply contact VPG Leeds by email or phone (details below) to schedule courier collection and discuss packaging requirements. If your request is made before 12pm Monday – Thursday, we’ll aim to collect the same day. Requests made after 12pm will be collected during the next business day.

This service is intended for tissues submitted following a post-mortem carried out by the submitting Veterinarian. Should you have any questions on how best to proceed or how a particular set of samples will be priced, please contact our Histopathology laboratory.

For samples taken following post-mortem examination, please list the tissues/organs submitted in detail, including number of samples per organ and ideally put each tissue in a separate labelled pot or ensure the pots are labelled accurately for the tissues they contain.
