Job Summary

Responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the VPG Laboratory Service, this role involves participating in routine testing of submitted samples, maintaining testing equipment, and identifying potential risks to the service. The individual performs various biomedical activities, including the efficient processing of diagnostic specimens to meet internal KPIs. Additionally, they ensure sufficient stock of consumable items and provide technical support to both the VPG testing service and external clients. Building and maintaining credible, productive relationships with other Lead Scientists and the laboratory team is also a key aspect of the role.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in the receipt, recording, storage, and disposal of specimens; perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations; maintain accurate records and documentation to ensure the accuracy of laboratory reports; and identify and resolve issues effectively.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, cleanliness, and decontamination of laboratory equipment and working areas; assist others in these tasks; and ensure that quality assurance procedures for laboratory instruments are followed.
  • Participate in the input and retrieval of data.
  • Prepare reagents for routine laboratory use.
  • Perform general laboratory duties, such as checking instruments and recording temperatures, and utilise the laboratory LIMS and other application software for data entry according to authorized protocols.
  • Deal with telephone enquiries to and from the department.
  • Plan and prioritise work allocations, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.
  • ¬†Assist with the writing and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for testing methods, ensure equipment is maintained and operated according to SOPs, and work in accordance with SOPs at all times.
  • Manage ordering and maintain stock control in the most efficient way, ensuring the correct supplies are always available.
  • Ensures Quality Assurance Reports for their designated section are maintained, issues highlighted and that reports are available for review by the management team and/or QC department.
  • Requests new equipment as needed, following the appropriate procurement procedures.
  • Assist with the training of Laboratory Assistants in new techniques and procedures, contribute to the development of new laboratory procedures, and demonstrate ongoing competency while actively participating in continuous professional development (CPD) activities.
  • Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate.
